Although there is a controversy about where pizza comes from, many dishes similar to pizza have appeared globally and as far back as sixth century BCE, a time when Darius the Great, Emperor of the Persians, and his advancing troops heated up flatbread with any toppings they had at a given time. The popularity of the pizza in Napoli reached new levels during the seventeenth century, when foreigners visited this city just to try this new dish that Spanish soldiers talked about.

In the 1700’s, India introduced a new kind of cheese to Italy that used water buffalo milk, called Mozzarella di Bufala.

The pizza has a long and delicious history. After the Queen of Napoli, Maria Carolina d’Asburgo Lorena, and the Queen of Italy, Margherita di Savoia tasted this gastronomic wonder, there was no turning back.

Fish, mollusk and crustean toppings are common in Spain. Spanish citizens are long renowned for their unrivaled appetite for seafood, borne out by the fact that Madrid has the highest per capita seafood consumption in Europe.

Much like the United States, New Zealand’s locals insist that its regional pizzas are beyond compare. Deep-dish style appears to be preferred in Hastings, while thin-crust is seemingly the preference in Wellington.

Canada’s love for pizza almost equals the U.S.’s and while classic pizzas are available, the country’s square version is unique.

The country of Italy is a world on its own.
