When Did The New Orleans Saints Participate Within The Super Bowl?
The Super Bowl stands out as the championship game for the National Football League (NFL), the premier association of professional American Football. It had been first played on January 15th, 1967 as part of a merger agreement involving the NFL and its then-rival league, the American Football League (AFL). It was arranged that the two leagues’ champion teams should play in an AFL vs. NFL World Championship Game till the merger was consummated in 1970. Following the merger, each league grew to become a conference, and the game was then played between the conference champions. The Super Bowl makes use of Roman numerals in order to name each game, as opposed to the year in which it is held. Super Bowl I was played in 1967 to find out the champions of the regular season played in 1966, and Super Bowl XLIV was played on February 7th, 2010 to determine the champion of the 2009 regular season. They repeated this feat in their most successful season in 2009, but would win the game as well as their first conference championship that sent them to their first Super Bowl appearance. At Super Bowl XLIV, the Saints won the city of New Orleans its first league championship, defeating the Indianapolis Colts 31-17. On September 17th 1967 the Saints took the field for their first regular season game in front of 80,879 fans at ancient Tulane Stadium. However the Saints would be defeated at the inaugural game to the Los Angeles Rams 27-13. The Saints would not win their first game until November 5th when they defeated the Philadelphia Eagles, 31-24, thanks to Walt Roberts scoring three touchdowns.
